Valetta WD160 from RAF
267 Sqn crashed on 23 February 1954 at Mount Ophir, Johor. Her
mission was to carry out a voice hailer above the terrorist's
area to persuaded them to surrender.
The aircraft was a
stop-gap role for sky shouting work in the Psychology War
against the CTs (Communist Terrorists) of the Malayan Emergency
1948-1960 period. It wasn't suited for the job and 8 Valettas
were lost, which was later taken over by the properly configured
DC3 Dakotas.
All crews on board were killed on impact and the cause of the
incident was probably from engine failure or stalling. Flight
Officer Alan Ashton who flew Dakota Voice Hailer asks permission
from Flight Commander Dick Perkins who actually flew WD160 to
swapped his seat and flew WD160 on her fateful day.
